SWVA Steel Lays Off 53

Steel of West Virginia (Huntington, West Virginia) announced the layoff of 53 employees. This is a seasonal layoff due to the lack of orders for guardrails, signposts and other products used in highway construction. Along with highway construction products, Steel of WVA makes steel for mine rails, mining cars, posts and other specialized equipment for the mining industry.

The company continues to maintain about 300 employees.

Mingo "Jefferson Iron" Plant

This is a photo of the Carnegie Steel "Jefferson Iron Plant at Mingo Junction, Ohio taken ca. 1938 (Now Severstal Wheeling-Mingo). This unique photo shows the coal tipple that used to set on the furnace grounds. Also shown are Carnegie blast furnaces No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 (No. 1 had previously been demolished). Notice the two sets of Amsler 3-pass hot blast stoves on No. 2 and No. 3.

When Wheeling Steel bought the property and combined both plants in 1945 the numbering of the furnaces changed. No. 1 & 2 remained at Steubenville. Mingo No. 3 remained the same. Mingo No. 2 was renumbered to No. 4 (The old Carnegie No. 4 had been demolished) and Wheeling No. 5 was built just south of the old Carnegie No. 4.

Severstal to Restart Yorkville

It was announced today that Severstal Wheeling will begin its restart with
the Yorkville Plant. Yorkville will receive its coils from Baltimore.

LUCY FURNACE PHOTOS

Does anyone know of a source for photos of the Lucy Furnace plant located in Pittsburgh on the Allegheny River across from the Isabella Furnaces (in Etna, PA)? Both plants became Carnegie facilities, then USS facilities, before being dismantled (Lucy in the 1940s and Isabella in the 1950s, according to print sources I have seen).

There are a few web photos of Isabella that are certifiably authentic, but the only "Lucy Furnace" web photo I have found (on the Rivers of Steel website) appears, upon close study, to be mislabeled.

Rivers of Steel captions the photo as showing the razing of the Lucy Furnaces. However, based on the surrounding topography and the railyard layout visible in the background--and based on a late 1940s Life Magazine photo of the Edgar Thomson furnaces viewed from almost exactly the same angle--that the "Lucy" shot actually shows the razing of the two most antique blast furnaces then standing along the main ore yard at E.T. for the purpose of creating space for construction of two totally new Arthur McKee high-topworks furnaces, one of which is still standing today, at what USS now calls its "Mon Valley" works.

Are there any other sources for Lucy Furnace photos? The plant was of considerable historical significance during Andrew Carnegie's lifetime. It seems strange that so little documentation of it is found.

Severstal Plans to Restart Wheeling Plant

Russia Severstal to restart Wheeling, U.S. plant

MOSCOW, Nov 19 (Reuters) - Severstal (CHMF.MM: Quote, Profile, Research), Russia's largest steel maker, said it plans to restart operations at its idled Wheeling, West Virginia plant thanks to improved U.S. demand.

"As a result of market improvement and demand that we see we intend to restart some...operations at our Wheeling plant," Severstal investor relations head Dmitry Druzhinin said during a conference call on Thursday.

He did not say when Severstal intends to restart the plant, but added that an announcement would be made in due course.

I am not sure if they are talking about the entire Severstal Wheeling facility which is in Mingo or if there is some ancillary plant actually located in Wheeling. But thats good news anyways.

Worthington Steel Colors

This is a color rendition of a Worthington Steel standard locomotive. Worthington Steel is a large steel processor based in Worthington (Columbus), Ohio. The company processes custom strip steel and manufactures high pressure gas cylinders. In addition, they have a half interest in a modern steel manufacturing plant in Delta, Ohio.

Wheeling Steel- Portsmouth

This is a view of Wheeling Steel Corporation's Blast Furnace No. 1 at its Portsmouth, Ohio plant. This furnace was 92' high, 18' at the hearth and 22' 8" at the bosh. Total pig iron capacity of this furnace was 285,000 tpy. This plant later became the Detroit Steel Division of the Universal-Cyclops Corporation. It was demolished in the 1980's.

National Malleable Castings

Here is a little more information on National Malleable Castings in Chicago. They purchased coke and coke gas from By-Products Coke Corporation and Interlake and most likely purchased pig iron from Federal Furnace and Interlake Iron.
